Herpes zoster (or simply zoster), commonly known as shingles and also known as zona, is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters in a limited area on one side of the body, often in a stripe. The initial infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes the acute (short-lived) illness chickenpox which generally occurs in children and young people. Once an episode of chickenpox has resolved, the virus is not eliminated from the body but can go on to cause shingles—an illness with very different symptoms—often many years after the initial infection. Varicella zoster virus can become latent in the nerve cell bodies and less frequently in non-neuronal satellite cells of dorsal root, cranial nerve or autonomic ganglion, without causing any symptoms. Years or decades after a chickenpox infection, the virus may break out of nerve cell bodies and travel down nerve axons to cause viral infection of the skin in the region of the nerve. The virus may spread from one or more ganglia along nerves of an affected segment and infect the corresponding dermatome (an area of skin supplied by one spinal nerve) causing a painful rash. Although the rash usually heals within two to four weeks, some sufferers experience residual nerve pain for months or years, a condition called postherpetic neuralgia. Exactly how the virus remains latent in the body, and subsequently re-activates is not understood. Throughout the world the incidence rate of herpes zoster every year ranges from 1.2 to 3.4 cases per 1,000 healthy individuals, increasing to 3.9–11.8 per year per 1,000 individuals among those older than 65 years. Antiviral drug treatment can reduce the severity and duration of herpes zoster if a seven- to ten-day course of these drugs is started within 72 hours of the appearance of the characteristic rash. GNU Free Documentation License What are some home remedies for shingles pain? Q. I came down with shingles and the meds are helping with the pain but not a whole lot. Is there any home remedies I should try? Asked by kathy r - Fri Feb 15 13:03:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Axsain cream (made from chilli peppers or capsaicin ) has been proven to be effective at stopping the pain. You rub it on, or near, the place where the nerves are itching/painful, that is, in the same dermatome region. If the pain is near your eye or under your hair, you can rub the cream on your cheek well away from your eyelid, or on your forehead. Use a small (pea sized) amount 3 or 4 times a day for about 3 weeks. It stops the pain for seven out of ten people. Since Axsain cream can burn, some people rub in an anaesthetic, or numbing, cream about 15 minutes before applying Axsain. This is lignocaine BP which can be bought, without prescription, as a 2% gel or a 5% ointment. How does IKO shingles stand up against other brands? What are other brands in the same price category? When one would choose organic vs fiberglass, does the price varry? I am thinking of choosing the 25 Year option. Thank you in advance for your advise. Asked by bamygol - Mon Aug 27 11:27:32 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. IKO is probably as good as any. They don't manufacture in the Southern US, so if you live in the south, you would probably pay more for them because of shipping charges. The best way to buy is to buy a brand that manufactures close to your project. Some other good brands are the shingle with the fiberglass mat is probably your best choice. If you live in an arid climate then the organic would be a good choice. If you are looking at the 25 year three-tab, you might want to consider the 30-yr laminate for just a few dollars more. The laminate is heavier and will have a higher wind resistance rating. If you buy TAMKO, they have "algae resistance" as a standard feature on their 30-yr laminate shingle. Shingles that have the "algae… [cont.] Answered by Romeo - Mon Aug 27 12:53:06 2007 Can a person get shingles on an upper arm?
Q. All of the online literature seems to indicate that the shingles rash only forms on the torso or face, and I am positive I have it on my upper arm. Can someone confirm that this is possible? Also, how will the doctor diagnose me? Blood tests? Asked by Rebecca - Thu Nov 9 03:53:09 2006 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. You can get shingles anywhere on your body where there are nerve endings, so it is possible to have it on your upper arm. I am pretty sure your doctor will give you a blood test to rule out any other illness.
