The knee joint joins the thigh with the leg and consists of two articulations: one between the femur and tibia, and one between the femur and patella. It is the largest joint in the human body and is very complicated. The knee is a mobile trocho-ginglymus (i.e. a pivotal hinge joint), which permits flexion and extension as well as a slight medial and lateral rotation. Since in humans the knee supports nearly the whole weight of the body, it is the joint most vulnerable to both acute injury and the development of osteoarthritis.

It is often grouped into tibiofemoral and patellofemoral components. (The fibular collateral ligament is often considered with tibiofemoral components.)

Is it possible for the knee ligaments to rupture due to medication for a different condition?
Q. My mother had a hysterectomy that went horribly wrong and underwent 4 more surgical procedures to correct the damage. She was given some medication - she can't remember what - and later experienced extremely painful knees. After an ex-ray she was informed that her knee ligaments were ruptured due to this medication - it was probably some strong antibiotics, steroids or hormone treatment. Is it possible that this is the case and if so how can she relive the pain she experiences during the night?

A. It is possible that a medication might damage the ligament in the knee but unless we know for sure what medication she was on it would be hard to tell you for sure Who told you that it was the medication that weakened her ligaments? was it the Xray technician? The Doctor? the Nurse? Who ever it was I would ask them what the medication was and do research for possible lawsuits into that medication?

What are the risks of having a knee replacement?
Q. My grandmother is 64 and she is going to have a knee replacement in a few weeks. She is not worried at all, she has a great surgeon and she is very excited to get a new knee. I just want to know if there are any major risks during the surgery. I am very close to her and I don't want anything bad to happen.

A. life threatening or serious risks are rare. the most common problem is that it's a fairly painful recovery. that cpm machine they use post-operatively to passively move the knee will hurt a lot. but it's important that she use it otherwise she risks having her knee get "locked up."

How likely is it to dislocate your knee cap while snowboarding?
Q. My friend is going snowboarding for her first time, and she has really bad knees. Her knee caps are easily dislocated due to stretched out ligaments. Do you think snowboarding is too dangerous for her?

A. Is snowboarding too dangerous for her? No. Does it pose SOME danger to her? Yes, of course, especially since she has a weak knee. FYI, your main concern here is not the snow, but rather the hard ice that can sometimes form under the snow. But this can be easily solved. Just get a decent knee-pad (the ones you use for skateboarding and stuffs) from walmart, that will protect her knee very well. Just wear it properly under the pants. For myself, I use the volleyball knee pad, and that does the trick for me. Never really feel the impact if I fall on my knees. The skateboard knee-pads should offer even better protections. I think your friend should just try it out, and try hitting her knee to a hard surface. If she don't feel a thing,… [cont.]
