An anchor is a heavy object, often made out of metal, that is used to attach a ship to the bottom of a body of water at a specific point to act as a weight to keep the ship from moving. There are two primary classes of anchors—temporary and permanent. A permanent anchor is often called a mooring, and is rarely moved; it is quite possible the vessel cannot hoist it aboard but must hire a service to move or maintain it. Vessels carry one or more temporary anchors which may be of different designs and weights. A sea anchor is an unrelated device: a drogue used to control a drifting vessel.

The vessel is attached to the anchor by the rode which is made with chain, cable, or mooring line (or a combination of these). The hole in the hull through which the anchor rode passes is called "hawsepipe" because thick mooring lines are called "hawsers".

An anchor works by resisting the movement force of the vessel which is attached to it. There are two primary ways to do this—via sheer mass, and by "hooking" into the seabed. While permanent moorings can use large masses resting on this seabed, this is not practical for temporary anchors which need to be stowed onboard, so almost all temporary anchors are of the type which have metal flukes which hook on to rocks in the bottom or bury themselves in soft bottoms.

An interesting element of anchor jargon is the term aweigh, which describes the anchor when it is hanging on the rope, not resting on the bottom; this is linked to the term to weigh anchor, meaning to lift the anchor from the sea bed, allowing the ship or boat to move. An anchor is described as aweigh when it has been broken out of the bottom and is being hauled up to be stowed. Aweigh should not be confused with under way, which describes a vessel which is not moored to a dock or anchored, whether or not it is moving through the water. Thus, a vessel can be under way (or underway) with no way on (i.e., not moving).

How to perform a mediterranean mooring with 2 anchors?
Q. Can somebody explain step by step how to perform a mediterranean mooring with 2 anchors? To responder Noddy: Mediterranean Mooring is a docking style that refers to the boat being docked stern in to the dock. It is not about droping the anchor in the mediterranean sea.

A. My husband and I often did Med type mooring, sometimes with two anchors if there was a current, but usually with only one anchor. We usually docked stern to unless we suspected underwater junk close to the dock, as stern to made for easier "on and off". Choose your space at the dock. Know the depth of the water and get your anchor road ready, making sure you have enough road to get to the dock. You may need a trip line if there is junk on the bottom. You will need fenders on both sides as there will most likely be other boats close to you. You will also need fenders at the stern - I am assuming you will dock stern to. You'll need two dock lines ready at the stern, one for port and one for starboard. When everything is ready… [cont.]

What is the HTML code for page anchors and search engines?
Q. I would like to make "page anchors" so that someone can link to another part of a page on my site. Also, I would like to know if anyone has any idea how to make a search engine to search the site.

A. Page anchors are created using a named anchor tag. Go to Part 1 Go to Part 2 Go to Part 3 Part 1

As far as making a search engine to search the site, that's a completely different beast. It would largely depend on what programming languages are available for your host provider (PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, Perl, Java, etc). If you just want to put a simple search box that only searches your site, the easiest way is to embed a Google search box that is restricted to your site. Try this:

will i have to take off my dermal anchors on my chest for breast augmentation?
Q. i have dermal anchors on my chest between my breasts. however i think i want to have a breat augmentation. do you think i would have to take them out? or they wudnt interfere?
Asked by unknown - Sun Dec 13 00:03:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. your gonna have to check with your doctor. lie adn tell him they are permanent implants and beg him to work around them. it's possible, though, that the augmentation could cause the anchors to reject. i'm not saying it would happen, but i suppose it's possible and, i'd really love to hear the answer to that. maybe you could take note of my name, or keep my email address, kreston001@yahoo, and let me know when you find out?
