A. Welding: Is when 2 similar metals are fused together. Dis-similar metals can't be welded such as copper to steel. There are many different types of welding such as, Mig, Arc, Electron beam, Laser, and Friction. Brazing: Is when 2 or metals are heated and a filler metal (alloy) is added or pre-placed to create a bond between the metals. Unlike welding many dissimilar metals can be brazed together. There are many different braze alloys such as Aluminum, Silver, Copper, Gold, and Nickel. Which alloy that is used is based on the application that the brazed assembly is intended for and what the solidus temperature is of the base metals being brazed. Can brass be welded or soldered.?

I want to replace batteries in a 12v drill battery pack. Has anyone out there done this?
Q. The batteries in the pack are connected with metal strips. I suspect they are spot welded. Has anyone had luck taking them apart and soldering new ones in their place? I can buy an 18v cheapo drill right now for $10. I want to toss the drill and use the batteries as replacements in my good drills.

A. yes i have - it's kind of a mess. my attempt featured a short circuit, smoke, and burnt plastic... (you can buy replacement batteries from many sources on the web - mine were a size called 'sub-c' - rather than pillaging another drill, unsoldering, and resoldering. usually power tools use NiCd batteries, but you'd have to be sure before putting them on your charger...which might use circuitry for a different battery type.) first problem is that the manufacturers didn't intend on the batteries being opened - i had to cut mine open with a dremel (at risk of cutting into a cell containing cadmium - not friendly stuff). they also cram the cells into as small a space as possible so you end up having to solder everything together into a… [cont.]
