What materials/supplies are needed for oil painting?
Q. While at an art supply outlet store Christmas shopping for my sister-in-law I found a $75 box of oil paints, palette, brushes, and turpentine marked down to $15. She normally does drawing and acrylics but I thought at this price, it was too good to pass up. I'm not an artist though so I don't know if she needs any additional supplies in order to use the oil paints. Please let me know if there is something else that would be necessary (or even helpful) for her to have when working with oils. Oh, I bought about $300 worth of canvas for $30 so she's good to go there! ;-) The canvas says it's treated for both acrylic & oil paints... does she still need the gesso?

A. She needs linseed oil! Make sure to get linseed oil made especially for artists, I reccommend a sun-bleached variety. Is the canvas gessoed for oil-based media? If not, might want to get some gesso as well. I know that stuff gets gone quickly anyway.

Materials/Supplies for Really Detailed Art?
Q. Does anyone know what materials/supplies they used to do really detailed art like some of the Arabic art you see or even some of the Gothic stuff with the really detailed borders and stuff? I've also seen gold floral stuff that could be interesting to know how to do.
Asked by butterfli71 - Sat Sep 15 14:34:03 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you mean the detailed borders on manuscripts and the like then it was a good eye and a steady hand. Take out your pen and draw then you fill in the color. I would use gouache. You can then add gold leaf which rubs on.

I have a 1098T form for attending film school. Can I write off film props as school materials or supplies?
Q. I got a 1098-T sent to me from a film school that I attended last year. I wanted to know if I could write off the money I spent buying props and even buying food to feed my crew and actors. Should I use Turbo Tax to file for my taxes given my situation or should I try and find a professional? Thank you!

Is there a teacher specific website for selling unwanted materials?
Q. I'm not talking about Ebay. I visited the site several years ago and cannot remember the name. Teachers post unwanted classroom materials, supplies, manipulatives, etc and then they are directly contacted about selling/shipping. Thanks. PS-You say EBAY no points : )

What mark up should you place on materials supplied.?
Q. I run a small building company , recently my client went to B&Q to choose some materials and gave me a list of the items they wanted me to install in there kitchen. I purchased the items and then installed them as they knew the price if the items I only earned money for the installation, since we have had a problem with one of the items and my client has said I need to sort it out as they purchased the items from me. What percentage should I add to the purchase price of materials I supply clients to cover time and losses if an item breaks.
Asked by Simon - Wed Aug 12 16:41:24 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your best bet in this situation would be to get the client to purchase the materials themselves since they have specified exactly what they want. You then charge them for the installation and avoid any future problems. This is quite common.

What is the best place to buy basement remodeling materials?
Q. I am in the planning phase of finishing our basement, and wondered where the best place was to buy materials and supplies. I'm asking more about drywall, lumber, screws, etc. since this will be the most expensive part of the first phase. Are the Big Box stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) the most cost effective choice, or is there a more cost effective alternative? The first poster brought up an interesting point. I'm located in the Kansas City area, so local options would be the best solution.
Asked by Heath F - Wed Feb 3 16:02:14 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If your material costs are over $1,500 go to Home Depot contractor desk. Tell them you would like pricing form "the bid room". When you give them a material list, they run their regular pricings and then cut At least 8% off, and more if the order is substantial. Take a material list to multiple stores and get quotes. They are free. Then compare pricings line by line, and you can save some money by getting material from multiple sources. Hope this helps

You may do just fine printing out everything at school, but not if your school makes you pay, so be sure to check on that. 3. Backpack/bookbag/rolling suitcase. How you choose to lug around your extremely heavy law books (and possibly your laptop) is a matter of personal choice, but regardless you ll need something large, sturdy, and reliable. A. Edwin, not to be rude but if you don't know what you need to run your business, then how are you going to run your business? Maybe you should get a job with a lawnmower business and see what you need. You might find that after buying all the tools and stuff, you don't really like the lawnmower business and now you are stuck with all the stuff. To start a business, you have to have a basic idea of what you are doing before you open.

A. A lot of the elementary and middle schools around here send their supply lists to the office supply stores and Walmart. The stores usually put the lists on a bulletin board near the door or they have them posted at the customer service desk. (This helps the managers know what things to stock too.) Everybody needs paper and pencil! Some teachers like pens because they make good dark contrast, but some hate them and want pencil only; especially math teachers. others want only dark blue or black ink. You never know until you meet the teacher. Some teachers ask kids to bring a box of Kleenex (tissues). They'll store and use the boxes one at a time all year long as needed.
