Finishing is the procedure that some single malt Scotch whisky undergoes whereby the spirit is matured in a cask of a particular origin and then spends time in a cask of different origin. Typically, the first cask is an American oak cask formerly used to mature bourbon. The second cask is usually one that has been used to mature some sort of fortified wine, often sherry, though sometimes port, madeira, or even standard wines such as burgundy or chardonnay.

Some of the more well-known finished whiskies include Balvenie "Double Wood", which is finished in sherry casks, Glenlivet "American Oak Finish" and "French Oak Finish", which are finished in brand-new casks of the respective woods, and the Glenmorangie range of sherry, port, madeira, and burgundy finishes.

When finishing a basement, should you install your recessed lights/speakers first or the ceiling?
Q. Our basement is not currently finished and we are currently looking into finishing it. Should we put recessed lights in before or after we put up a dry wall ceiling?

A. Rough it in before the ceiling goes up. Make sure you have everything you want in place before slapping the sheetrock up!

What do i use to prepare a basement floor for finishing?
Q. I have a Superior Wall basement. When they finished it had expansion seams in the floor and a 2"x2" hole in each of the four corners. Most of my moisture is coming from these holes. I want to prepare the floor for finishing but i need to adress these holes and seams but just don't know how.

A. The joints can be caulked. A flexible caulk will still allow for expansion and contraction. What were the holes in the corners for? Might they be for a drainage system? Did the installer say anything about that? How deep are the holes, are they filled with dirt? Does water stream into your basement through the joints or those holes? Are the walls and floor dry, damp or wet? Did the basement floor get poured over foam insulation or gravel or just dirt? Is the basement heated and air conditioned? The simple answer is to caulk the joints and fill-in the holes with cement. Then lay down a heavy gauge plastic vapor barrier and build a 2x4 framed, 3/4" thick plywood subfloor. Then you could install whatever flooring you wanted on top… [cont.]

how much should a finishing carpenter with one years experience be paid per hour?
Q. Im just wondering if 13$ an hour is way too low for a finishing carpenter im getting really fast at casing and baseboard and i live in edmonton alberta canada.
Asked by Curt - Fri Jan 29 00:22:52 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. $13 (especially Canadian) is a fair wage for a 2nd year apprentice. Are they paying into a pension fund like unions have? Other benefits? (In the US health coverage is a big deal). If no benefits are included, $13 is a little low, but at least it's work, and you will hopefully move up as your skill set increases.
