In woodworking and decorative arts, refinishing refers to the act of repairing or reapplying the wood finishing on an object. In practice, this may be apply to the paint or wood finish top coat, lacquer or varnish. The artisan or restorer is traditionally aiming for an improved or restored and renewed finish. Refinishing can apply to a variety of surfaces and materials such as wood, glass, metal, plastic and paint, although in Britain, when referring to wood or wooden furniture it is commonly known as repolishing.

There are a great variety of both traditional and modern finishes, including the use of faux finishes. One interesting modern development in refinishing is the art of distressing or antiquing, making the finishes of pieces look older.

While refinishing is often undertaken to salvage an old piece of furniture, in the case of antique furniture refinishing has been known to significantly reduce the overall value of the piece.

How do you get the stuff out of the cracks when refinishing hardwood floors?
Q. I am sanding down and redoing my hardwood floors. How do i get the junk out of the cracks that has accumulated over the years? And any tips or tricks for refinishing hardwood floors?

A. Use toothpicks and a vacuum to get the mess out. The toothpicks are soft enough that they should not damage the wood the way a metal tool might. Be careful with the sander. It is easy to sand gouges in the wood.

A. i like the electric ones with variable speed they seem to do a lot better job,the air driven ones are alright but have a tendency to loose their power to much ,or bog down, and either a good de-walt or a Milwaukee are the best on the market right now,i bought a Milwaukee, and it has been really good ,the de-walt is as good though and about 50 bucks cheaper now,and its rated no-1 by most body shops, good luck hope this helps.
