In woodworking and decorative arts, refinishing refers to the act of repairing or reapplying the wood finishing on an object. In practice, this may be apply to the paint or wood finish top coat, lacquer or varnish. The artisan or restorer is traditionally aiming for an improved or restored and renewed finish. Refinishing can apply to a variety of surfaces and materials such as wood, glass, metal, plastic and paint, although in Britain, when referring to wood or wooden furniture it is commonly known as repolishing. There are a great variety of both traditional and modern finishes, including the use of faux finishes. One interesting modern development in refinishing is the art of distressing or antiquing, making the finishes of pieces look older. While refinishing is often undertaken to salvage an old piece of furniture, in the case of antique furniture refinishing has been known to significantly reduce the overall value of the piece. From Google News Search: "Refinishing" Should I paint the walls before or after refinishing the floors? Q. I'm considering repainting my walls and also having the hardwoods resurfaced and refinished. I'm just not sure which order to do it in. I figured you paint first then worry about the floors, but the floor people suggested I do the floor first because of the dust. Something about not getting the dust on new paint. what do you think? Asked by jimbob - Tue Oct 23 17:41:54 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. The hardwood floors is the last thing you do. Once the paint is dry, the dust will just wipe off. If you refinished the the floors before you paint, you'll have to get the dust off of your walls before your first coat.
